Shafter graduate Anna Jelmini, a sophomore at Arizona State, took second place in the discus at the NCAA Track and Field Championships for the second straight year Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jelmini's best throw was 192 feet, 10 inches, which would have been good enough to win the event a year ago when she threw 190-2 as a freshman. But this year, San Diego State's Whitney Ashley threw 196-10 on her second-to-last throw to nip Jelmini, who had three of the six best throws overall.

"It's been an incredible ride, an incredible run," trainer Doug O'Neill said. "It's a bummer. It's not tragic, but it's a huge disappointment."
