For Frontier's softball team, adversity had come -- and been dealt with -- long before Friday's 6-5 home victory over North in the Central Section Division II quarterfinals.

Josh Eagle threw a complete-game shutout as Sierra College beat Orange Coast 4-0 in opening round action of the CCCAA Baseball State Championship on Friday at Gerry Collis Field.

The Wolverines (26-15-1) scored two runs in the first and two more in the third on a Kaden Kamoe homer to back Eagle (11-2), who struck out seven.

Thurman (8-2), a sophomore, struck out six and walked four. Tyler Shryock tripled for CSUB's lone hit. He threw 100 pitches in the game.

LAKE ELSINORE -- Bakersfield reliever Brooks Pinckard allowed five runs in the seventh inning as the Lake Elsinore Storm topped the Blaze 6-3 on Friday night at The Diamond.

The Blaze entered the seventh with a 2-1 lead, as starter Tony Cingrani struck out 12 Storm batters in the first six innings.

The Titans lost four of six singles matches, with three of the losses in gut-wrenching tie-breakers. That meant Frontier needed to sweep the three doubles matches to pull out the victory.

Jake Varner enjoyed his last public appearance in Bakersfield before the London Olympics with a meet-and-greet Thursday in the Bakersfield High cafeteria.

Varner leaves Saturday for State College, Pa., where he trains with Penn State University. Later this summer he'll move to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., before heading to London in late July for the Olympics.

The scene has become a familiar one. The Bakersfield Christian boys tennis team dumping a bucket of ice water or Gatorade on coach Frank Thiessen after collecting another section championship plaque.

That's how it played out once again as the top-seeded Eagles defeated visiting Chowchilla 6-3 to win their eighth straight Central Section championship.
