Mike McCarthy: Stars, but they still put their pants on one leg at a time

Sun, 03/18/2012 - 04:45

There are moments in life when we are truly humbled by the size of the world around us. This happens on a micro level as well when you look at an industry or a major company.

There is no question I feel extremely lucky and proud to have made it into professional baseball but one of the many challenges of being here is the "awe factor."

March 16 fish report

Fri, 03/16/2012 - 06:31

Kern County, southern San Joaquin Valley

LAKE ISABELLA: Trout action remains fair to good at the auxiliary dam for bait anglers fishing floating baits, Power Mice Tails, or inflated nightcrawlers. DFG plants last week and three weeks ago. Few reports on crappie, and the bass and bluegill action is also slow. The 23rd Annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby will be held March 31-April 2 with over $250,000 in potential prize winnings.

Steve Merlo: Winter storm could bash fish counts at local lakes

Fri, 03/16/2012 - 06:26

This weekend's rapidly approaching storm will be sure to send water temperatures plummeting, and with the drop, anglers will see a just budding bite on bass and crappie hit the skids as well.

Most experts stand in agreement that the bite is still, unfortunately, a solid two to three weeks away for most species. After the upcoming cold front, look for the fish to recover within three or four days and start the spawning trend to the shallows all over again. Figure April 1 as the new target day for anglers everywhere.

Patriots notch 'important' non-league win over Rams

Thu, 03/15/2012 - 06:21
