CERRITOS -- Bakersfield College freshman Chris Schwartz finished third in the 1,500 and 5,000 at the state track and field championships at Cerritos College on Saturday.

Schwartz, a Foothill High graduate, finished just one hundreth of a second behind second-place Christian Soratos of Hartnell in the 1,500, with a 3:47.04. Matt Airola of American River won in 3:45.80.

IRVINE -- Andrew Letourneau went 2-for-3 with three RBI's to lead Cal State Bakersfield to a 5-4 victory Saturday over UC Irvine.

CSUB (21-28) scored three runs with two outs in the seventh to get back on top. Letourneau broke the tie with a two-run double, followed by a Kevin Younger RBI-double that scored Letourneau.

Maybe you'd think this wasn't what East High senior D.J. Johnson had in mind, when he came back to play high school tennis instead of focusing on the Southern California junior circuit.

Here's Johnson, playing doubles with a partner who isn't in the same stratosphere, and so the opposition is trying to hit every single shot away from him. But Johnson is racing from doubles alley to doubles alley, trying to hit every ball himself. The result often is a manaical game of two-on-one tennis, and Johnson usually wins anyway.

A lot of teams like to say they can deal with adversity when the time comes.

For Frontier's softball team, adversity had come -- and been dealt with -- long before Friday's 6-5 home victory over North in the Central Section Division II quarterfinals.

Based on the teams' records, it looked like a mismatch.

Only it didn't turn out that way.

Josh Eagle threw a complete-game shutout as Sierra College beat Orange Coast 4-0 in opening round action of the CCCAA Baseball State Championship on Friday at Gerry Collis Field.

The Wolverines (26-15-1) scored two runs in the first and two more in the third on a Kaden Kamoe homer to back Eagle (11-2), who struck out seven.

IRVINE -- Andrew Thurman threw a complete-game one-hitter as UC Irvine defeated Cal State Bakersfield 7-0 at Anteater Ballpark.

Thurman (8-2), a sophomore, struck out six and walked four. Tyler Shryock tripled for CSUB's lone hit. He threw 100 pitches in the game.

Division II quarterfinals

LAKE ELSINORE -- Bakersfield reliever Brooks Pinckard allowed five runs in the seventh inning as the Lake Elsinore Storm topped the Blaze 6-3 on Friday night at The Diamond.

The Blaze entered the seventh with a 2-1 lead, as starter Tony Cingrani struck out 12 Storm batters in the first six innings.

VISALIA -- Frontier High certainly did it the hard way in winning the school's first Central Section boys tennis team title.

The Titans lost four of six singles matches, with three of the losses in gut-wrenching tie-breakers. That meant Frontier needed to sweep the three doubles matches to pull out the victory.

Jake Varner enjoyed his last public appearance in Bakersfield before the London Olympics with a meet-and-greet Thursday in the Bakersfield High cafeteria.

Varner leaves Saturday for State College, Pa., where he trains with Penn State University. Later this summer he'll move to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., before heading to London in late July for the Olympics.

The scene has become a familiar one. The Bakersfield Christian boys tennis team dumping a bucket of ice water or Gatorade on coach Frank Thiessen after collecting another section championship plaque.

That's how it played out once again as the top-seeded Eagles defeated visiting Chowchilla 6-3 to win their eighth straight Central Section championship.

LAKE ELSINORE -- Catcher Eddy Rodriguez hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh inning and the Lake Elsinore Storm beat the Bakersfield Blaze 3-2 on Thursday night at The Diamond.

Blaze shortstop Billy Hamilton stole his 39th base of the season, scoring Bakersfield's lone run in the fifth inning.

California's community college baseball and softball champions will be determined this weekend at a pair of double-elimination tournaments at Bakersfield College.

The baseball tournament begins at noon today when Orange Coast faces Sierra College (25-15-1).

Only one rider at Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California had won an Olympic gold medal, and she took off down Alfred Harrell Highway Thursday morning before most spectators had noticed.

That's right, she. Kristin Armstrong -- no relation to Lance, though the cycling superstar's ex-wife has the same name -- was arguably the most decorated cyclist in Bakersfield for time trial Thursday. She backed it up, too, finishing the 18.4-mile loop from Bakersfield College to Lake Ming and back in 39 minutes, 59 seconds.

Captain America showed his strength Thursday on the streets of Bakersfield.

David Zabriskie, riding for Garmin-Barracuda and wearing his "Captain America" riding suit, stormed into the overall lead of the Amgen Tour of California with a powerful performance in an 18.4-mile time trial course that started and finished adjacent to Bakersfield College.

Forget what the seeds said: In a matchup of young Central Section baseball teams, the one with championship experience out-classed the one with none.

Clovis-Buchanan, the No. 6 seed, jumped on No. 3 Stockdale early and beat the host Mustangs 7-2 on Thursday in a Division I section quarterfinal.

Next week's scheduled Kern County Women's Amateur Golf Championship has been cancelled because of a lack of signed-up players, tournament chairwoman Jacque Servadio confirmed.

The event, which was scheduled May 23-24 at Foss-Kern River and the Links at RiverLakes Ranch golf courses, was to be the 76th annual tournament.
