Derek Carr's cell phone probably needed a few charges Thursday night as he waited out the first round of the NFL Draft at his brother David's house in southwest Bakersfield.

But the call, the one Derek has waited more than a decade for, never came.

Four home runs and a six-run sixth inning powered Liberty to a 9-8 victory against Southwest Yosemite League rival Centennial on Thursday.

"Our guys can swing it," Liberty coach Tony Mills said. "It's a small ballpark, we got pitches to hit and we took advantage of the elements with the wind blowing in the outfield. When you've got that, good things happen for you."

Curtis Threlkeld was willing to do whatever it took to help the North High boys track and field team win a fourth straight league title.

So when he was asked to run an extra event during Thursday's Southeast Yosemite League Championships at Bakersfield College, Threlkeld didn't hesitate to say yes even though he was already competing in three grueling, energy-sapping races.

Patriots freshman Cagnei Duncan came from relative anonymity to sweep the distance races Wednesday at Liberty in the Southwest Yosemite League finals, tacking on points for a team that didn't really need them to complete a sweep of four SWYL meets.

A baseball game with few strikeouts and no extra-base hits turns into a virtual fielding contest, so it's no surprise that Liberty came away with a 1-0 home victory over Centennial on Tuesday.

The Patriots -- after they opened the game with an error that seems strange in retrospect -- made brilliant play after play defensively, denying Centennial of many opportunities and allowing a first-inning RBI single from Josh Medina hold up as the game-winner.

Stockdale 3, Bakersfield 1

Frontier High baseball coach John Moncier has been suspended for the remainder of the season following an incident with an umpire during a game last week, the Kern High School District confirmed Tuesday.

The disciplinary action comes at a crucial time for the Titans (23-6), who wrapped up a Southwest Yosemite League championship Tuesday. Playoffs start next week.

No. 4 seed Stockdale dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker in the Central Section Division I quarterfinals, losing the final doubles match in a third-set tiebreaker against No. 5 Clovis North on Tuesday.

The teams were tied 3-3 after six singles matches.

One of these years, Bakersfield Christian isn't going to win a Central Section boys tennis team championship.

This season? It turned out to be another dominating run to a championship.

Centennial's Tyler Burnes, Stockdale's Jared Kinoshita and Liberty's Warren Miller sat together at a table in the clubhouse at Sundale Country Club. They were waiting patiently for the other competitors in Tuesday's Central Section South Area Tournament to finish their 18 holes.

The longtime friends were the first three to play the par-72 course and, as it turned out, they set the standard for the day, finishing first second, and third, respectively.

She Pree Brevil got up, dusted herself off, and walked out of the long jump pit at Bakersfield College frustrated and dismayed.

After a pair of sub-par jumps to begin the competition, the Ridgeview sophomore was sure that her final attempt wasn't anything special.

Stockdale's Brock Bonetti and Frontier's Jorie Caneta, bright stars in the world of high school swimming, both have their eyes set on records this month and much more later in the summer.

But they took the chance to soak up one last old-fashioned high school dual meet Friday at Silvercreek Park, swimming different events and mixing it up with friends.

The Liberty girls swimming team, led by senior Audrey Willoughby's four first-place finishes, beat Centennial on Friday at McMurtrey Aquatic Center with a 100-70 win to go undefeated in the Southwest Yosemite League.

Willoughby finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.54), 100 butterfly (1:03.64) and helped the Patriots to wins in the 200 free relay (1:47.95) and a season-best time in the 200 medley relay (2:00.10).

Alec Slykerman's win in his singles match spearheaded Garces' 5-4 victory over Bakersfield High.

"We were lucky to win this," said Garces coach Barb Johnston Hill. "We won 5-4, so I'm obviously happy about that, but we beat these guys 8-1 earlier this year and they came back at us today. It was hot and we had a few guys who could've played a lot better."
