Time trial for top women will be part of local Amgen stage

The second annual Amgen Tour of California Women's Time Trial Race, is set to take place in Bakersfield during Stage 5 of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California on May 17.

The Amgen Tour of California Women's Time Trial Race will use the same course as Stage 5 of the men's individual time trial in Bakersfield. The women's event will be an invitation-only competition featuring the leading female athletes in the world of cycling, all vying for a piece of the $10,000 prize pool.

Liberty, Stockdale set for tennis rematch on Thursday

The boys tennis teams at Liberty and Stockdale will finally get a chance to break their tie, and this one will have everything on the line.

The Patriots and Mustangs tied three times during the regular season -- 6-6 in both league meetings and 3-3 in a Lynch Cup match (won by Liberty on the third tiebreaker). Monday, the Central Section announced they'll play once more as the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds paired against each other in the Division I quarterfinals Thursday.

Donald Lutz hit his California League-leading 10th home run of the season in the 9th inning Tuesday to lead the Bakersfield Blaze to a 3-2 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks at Clear Channel Stadium.

Three Blaze pitchers, led by starter Justice French, held Lancaster to four hits. French worked six scoreless innings, struck out four and walked two.

The excitement started to brew back in mid-March when Bakersfield bowler Joe Smith won the District Finals at AMF Riverside Lanes in Riverside. It was the same weekend as our Mixed City Tournament and the news spread quickly at AMF Southwest Lanes that Smith would be going on to Vegas to bowl in the record-breaking $700,000 AMF National In-League Tournament.

Smith, 26, was among 108 finalists to compete the weekend of April 27-28, at The Orleans in Las Vegas. Finalists were competing in four divisions: Open, Division A, Division B and Division C. Smith was competing in the Open division. This year more than 25,000 AMF league bowlers entered this tournament.
