There's no way Steven Gee could have prepared for the morning of Jan. 10, 2013.
A senior at Taft High at the time -- and the only senior among 28 students in a science class -- Gee was sitting at his desk about 9 a.m. when a student, armed with a shotgun, entered the classroom and fired at Bowe Cleveland, a classmate in the room.
The Condors were just trying to celebrate a hard-fought victory. The Stockton Thunder may have been trying to send a message.
The Condors beat the Thunder 2-0 before a raucous crowd of 4,742 on Saturday night at Rabobank Arena to take a 2-games-to-none lead in what has turned into a cantankerous ECHL Western Conference semifinal.
She Pree Brevil got up, dusted herself off, and walked out of the long jump pit at Bakersfield College frustrated and dismayed.
After a pair of sub-par jumps to begin the competition, the Ridgeview sophomore was sure that her final attempt wasn't anything special.
Ben Lively kept his unbeaten record intact Friday as the Bakersfield Blaze held on for an 8-6 victory over the Modesto Nuts in a California League baseball game at John Thurman Field.
Lively's scoreless streak ended at 31 innings when he allowed two seventh-inning runs. In 6-2/3 innings, he struck out eight and walked just one in running his record to 6-0. He left the game with a 6-2 lead before Modesto (9-20) rallied with two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings.

Stockdale's Brock Bonetti and Frontier's Jorie Caneta, bright stars in the world of high school swimming, both have their eyes set on records this month and much more later in the summer.
But they took the chance to soak up one last old-fashioned high school dual meet Friday at Silvercreek Park, swimming different events and mixing it up with friends.
Stockton was good early, the Condors were better late.
That was the difference on Friday night as the Condors rallied for a 3-2 victory at Rabobank Arena.
The Liberty girls swimming team, led by senior Audrey Willoughby's four first-place finishes, beat Centennial on Friday at McMurtrey Aquatic Center with a 100-70 win to go undefeated in the Southwest Yosemite League.
Willoughby finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.54), 100 butterfly (1:03.64) and helped the Patriots to wins in the 200 free relay (1:47.95) and a season-best time in the 200 medley relay (2:00.10).
The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks signed West High graduate A.J. Jefferson to a free-agent deal Friday, the team announced.
The Seattle Times reported that the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Jefferson likely will be used as a backup cornerback and kickoff and punt returner for the Seahawks.

GREELEY, Colo. -- Senior left-hander Taylor Aikenhead pitched a complete game and won his team-best sixth game of the season Friday afternoon to lead Cal State Bakersfield to a 7-3 Western Athletic Conference baseball win at Northern Colorado.
Aikenhead allowed 10 hits and two walks and didn't have a 1-2-3 inning until the ninth.

With time winding down and the Condors in desperate need of a game-tying goal on April 24, coach Troy Mann turned to Andrew Carroll.
When goaltender Laurent Brossoit raced to the bench, Carroll jumped onto the ice and immediately headed to the blue paint where he camped out in front of Utah goaltender Igor Bobkov.
Juan Silva hit a three-run home run in the third inning and the Blaze's three pitchers made that hold up in a 3-1 win over the Stockton Ports Thursday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Zach Vincej singled and Jon Matthews walked before Silva drove his second homer of the season over the centerfield wall.
Alec Slykerman's win in his singles match spearheaded Garces' 5-4 victory over Bakersfield High.
"We were lucky to win this," said Garces coach Barb Johnston Hill. "We won 5-4, so I'm obviously happy about that, but we beat these guys 8-1 earlier this year and they came back at us today. It was hot and we had a few guys who could've played a lot better."
Stockton scored the tie-breaking run in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday and beat the Bakersfield Blaze 5-4 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Chad Pinder led off the Ports' ninth with a single.

It's a nightmare for any team: finding a way to lose.
And it's something that just isn't going away this season for Cal State Bakersfield baseball.
